Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Mathematics & Computer Science

University of Greenwich (UK)

London, United Kingdom

2000-2002

HIsmelt and Rio Tinto technology development funded research into multi-physics modelling of the cooling system employed within the HIsmelt direct smelting process for iron. This work involved predicting the refractory wear of the castable refractory, the slag freeze layer that forms. To achieve this the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling examined flow of slag, the heat transfer from the slag through the freeze layer and refractory to the cooling elements, the changes in the freeze layer, and the erosision/spalling/wear of the refractory including the slag infiltration into the refractory.
